Art
The KS2 Art curriculum at our school aims to inspire creativity, confidence, and self-expression while developing pupils’ skills and understanding of art and design. Through exploring a wide range of techniques, materials, and styles, children learn to draw, paint, sculpt, and create with purpose and imagination. The curriculum encourages experimentation, reflection, and resilience, enabling pupils to express ideas, emotions, and opinions while building a strong foundation of artistic knowledge and skills they can build on as they progress.
Knowledge
They study the work of artists, craft makers, and designers from different cultures and time periods, helping them to develop critical thinking and a deeper appreciation of visual art. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of artists and artworks, children not only recreate famous works of art, but also their own original, unique pieces.
Skills
Disciplinary knowledge is taught through regular opportunities for children to work artistically by exploring, practising, and refining a range of techniques. Children are encouraged to experiment with a range of materials and media and develop ideas through sketching, painting, collage and 3D sculpting. These creative skills are progressive and are embedded within each unit and revisited over time to build confidence, technical control, and a thoughtful approach to making and responding to art.
Experiences
Where possible, enrichment opportunities such as gallery visits and online gallery tours promote a better understanding and appreciation of art from around the world. Participating in online tutorials from artists or illustrators help children to see the types of job opportunities available to them within art. Children also share their work within the school and local community through their own gallery exhibitions and entering competitions.
