Computing

At Upminster Junior School, our computing teaching helps to equip pupils to be able to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. We also aim to encourage pupils to become confident, responsible and competent users of technology. Children are encouraged to understand how digital systems work, how they can be used safely and effectively, and how to apply their knowledge to solve problems and express ideas.

Knowledge

Pupils develop computing knowledge by learning key concepts, vocabulary and content across a broad and balanced curriculum. This includes computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Knowledge is built progressively throughout the school, ensuring depth and security of understanding, as children learn about algorithms, data, networks, systems and how computers process information.

Skills

Skills are developed through regular opportunities to think and work like computer scientists, digital creators and responsible online citizens. Pupils design, write and debug programs; use logical reasoning to predict and explain behaviour and apply computational thinking to tackle challenges. They also learn to use a variety of digital tools to collect, analyse and present information, developing creativity and precision. Online safety and digital responsibility are woven through all aspects of learning to ensure pupils understand how to stay safe and make positive choices in a connected world.

Experiences

Computing understanding is enriched through regular use of chrome books, collaborative projects and cross-curricular links that bring technology to life. Pupils may take part in coding challenges, or digital media projects that allow them to apply their learning in real-world contexts. This helps pupils see how computing shapes the world around them and inspires them to become the digital innovators of the future.
