Physical Education

PE teaching at Upminster Junior School aims to give all children a strong understanding of physical health, fitness, and wellbeing. Alongside this, pupils develop the skills and knowledge needed to participate confidently in a range of physical activities, understand the importance of staying active, and explore how exercise contributes to a healthy lifestyle both now and in the future. Children are encouraged to be active and motivated, developing their ability to plan, practice, and improve their physical skills, while using effective communication to collaborate and deepen their learning.

Knowledge

Children develop substantive knowledge by learning key concepts, vocabulary, and facts related to physical health, movement, and sport across the curriculum. This knowledge is built progressively throughout the school to ensure depth and lasting understanding.

Skills

Knowledge is taught through regular opportunities for children to engage in both indoor and outdoor activities such as gymnastics, dance, rounders, and football. They practise skills, understand rules, work as part of a team, and evaluate their own performance. These practical skills are embedded within each unit and revisited over time to develop confident, motivated learners, while also keeping children active.

Experiences

Pupils have the opportunity to take part in a variety of team events both inside and outside of school, fostering a sense of community, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The school’s annual Sports Day is a key highlight, encouraging healthy competition and personal achievement. Throughout the year, children engage with current sporting events such as the Women’s Rugby World Cup and the Ryder Cup, developing awareness of the wider sporting world and inspiring a lifelong interest in physical activity.
