Science
Science teaching at Upminster Junior School aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them. Alongside this, pupils acquire the skills and knowledge needed to think scientifically, understand scientific processes and explore the uses and implications of science today and in the future. Children are encouraged to be inquisitive, developing their ability to observe, plan and investigate, while building specialist vocabulary and using effective questioning to communicate and deepen their understanding.
Knowledge
Children develop substantive knowledge by learning key scientific concepts, vocabulary, and facts across the curriculum. This knowledge is built upon progressively throughout the school to ensure depth and security of understanding.
Skills
Disciplinary knowledge is taught through regular opportunities for children to work scientifically - asking questions, making predictions, carrying out investigations and drawing conclusions. These enquiry skills are embedded within each topic and revisited over time to develop scientific thinking and methodical approaches.
Experiences
Scientific understanding is deepened through hands-on investigations and practical activities that promote curiosity and active learning. Pupils use a variety of enquiry types to explore relevant scientific questions. Where possible, enrichment opportunities such as visiting workshops and expert visitors bring science to life and help connect learning to the wider world.
