Religious Education

Religious Education at Upminster Junior School helps children to learn about different religions and worldviews so they can understand, respect and celebrate the diversity of the world around them. Pupils are encouraged to ask big questions, share their own thoughts and listen to the views of others. Our intent is that pupils will leave UJS with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in multicultural Britain and in the global community.

Knowledge

Children learn about the main beliefs, stories, practices, rites of passage and special places from a range of religions and worldviews. They begin to recognise both similarities and differences between traditions and think about the importance of faith and belief in people’s lives. Their understanding grows year by year, giving them a secure foundation of knowledge.

Skills

Through discussion, questioning and reflection, pupils learn to think carefully about what they are studying and how it connects to real life (for themselves and their peers). They practise listening to others, explaining their own ideas clearly and respectfully, and exploring different answers to important questions about life, identity and values.

Experiences

RE is brought to life through visits to places of worship, handling artefacts, exploring festivals and welcoming visitors from faith communities. Children are also encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and beliefs. These opportunities help them to develop empathy, celebrate diversity and understand how people with different beliefs can live well together.
