Reading and Phonics

How Reading is taught at UJS

Reading is taught through structured whole-class reading sessions, which take place four times per week and are built around high-quality, engaging texts. Each session follows a consistent and supportive sequence, beginning with the teacher modelling fluent reading, followed by choral reading and pick-up reading to build confidence and accuracy. Pupils then engage in close reading of the text, allowing them to explore meaning in greater depth, before taking part in a focused vocabulary deep dive to develop understanding of key language. Each sequence concludes with carefully planned comprehension tasks, known as ‘big questions’, which encourage pupils to think critically, discuss ideas, and demonstrate a deeper understanding of the text.

Phonics teaching

At our school, we aim to ensure that all pupils become confident, fluent readers by securing their phonics knowledge and applying it consistently in both reading and spelling. Through the systematic use of Read Write Inc. phonics, we provide targeted support to ensure no pupil is left behind, enabling KS2 readers to catch up rapidly while fostering a lifelong love of reading and a positive, confident attitude towards books.

Developing a love of reading

At our school, we actively foster a love of reading by creating a rich and inviting reading culture that extends beyond the classroom. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure through a variety of engaging opportunities, including our outdoor Reading Shed in the playground, welcoming reading areas within school, and our popular Reading Café, where books are shared and enjoyed in a relaxed, social setting. We celebrate reading success through reading awards and motivate pupils with reading passports that track and inspire their progress. Children are given a voice through scrapbooks for book reviews, allowing them to reflect on and share their reading experiences. Our book club offers further opportunities to explore texts together, while daily 3pm reads ensure that reading remains a valued and enjoyable part of every school day.
